Good Dental Health

starts from the very beginning

Early childhood caries (tooth decay in children five and under) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in American children. As soon as your baby’s first tooth emerges, your baby can get cavities. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you begin brushing your baby’s teeth twice a day as soon as that first tooth comes in, and that you schedule your baby’s first dental exam no later than your child’s first birthday.

The IMPORTANCE OF YOUR

Baby's First Dental Visit

Developing good dental hygiene right from the start is extremely important. In 2015—2016, 21.4% of American children between the ages of two and five had tooth decay. Research suggests that, for each year past a child’s first birthday parents delay booking that first dental visit, the child’s odds of having tooth decay more than doubles.

Failure to properly care for your baby's teeth can result in pain, infection, premature loss of teeth, and impairment of overall health.

For more information on how bringing your child to the dentist before his or her first birthday can help reduce the risk of cavities, see our article on the importance of dental visits for babies.

WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR

Baby’s First Dentist Appointment

At your baby’s first dentist appointment, we will

  • review your baby's medical history and any concerns you have,
  • examine your baby's mouth for signs of tooth decay or other dental problems and
  • teach you how to clean your baby's teeth and gums.

Catching any dental issues early and learning how to properly care for your baby’s teeth can help your child avoid painful tooth decay and periodontal disease. At Hurst Pediatric Dentistry, our goal is to make every visit to our office a pleasant experience and to keep your child's teeth and mouth healthy and free of cavities.

WHY YOU SHOULD BRING YOUR BABY TO A

Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist

Choosing a pediatric dentist ensures that your baby will receive care from a dental specialist who has been trained to work with children. Unlike family dentists and other general dentists who treat children, pediatric dentists complete a two-year pediatric dental residency program after dental school. During their residency programs, pediatric dentists receive training in areas such as child psychology, child-related pharmacology, advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures, dental trauma, special needs dental care, and child sedation dentistry.

A board-certified pediatric dentist is a pediatric dentist who has completed the additional step of passing the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry’s oral and written exams. Passing these exams demonstrates mastery of advanced pediatric dentistry skills.
